What is an Egress window?
An egress window is simply a window with specific dimensions and placement to provide an emergency exit for a room. An egress window is required in any sleeping room, which is considered a room with a closet. Other rooms could require egress windows depending on whether they are on the 3rd floor or in a basement. A door that opens to a balcony or to the outside may be used in lieu of an egress window.

What are the dimensions for an egress window?
Dimensions for an egress window must satisfy your local codes. Generally, many codes require:

- Minimum width of opening: 20 inches
- Minimum height of opening: 24 inches
- Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 sq. ft. (5.0 sq. ft. for ground floor)
- Maximum sill height above floor: 44 inches

Egress window openings must be operational from the inside without keys, tools, or special knowledge. Bars, grilles and grates may be installed over windows but must be operational without tools or keys and still allow the minimum clear opening.
